Printed in black on oriental paper, c. 1935-37. Undescribed proof state, intermediate between the purely linear first state Coy alludes to and a third state (illustrated in Coy) with additional flecks on the trunk second from left. One of only ten impressions known.
Like a number of his artist contemporaries, Fitzgerald developed the habit of making a printed Christmas card annually, which served as a modest self-promotion as well as a friendly greeting. Eschewing the usual seasonal formulae, from 1923 to 1947 he produced spare designs of natural forms and occasional views from windows in geometric terms, largely in linocut on a black ground. The purity of his contours was always paramount, as it was in his drypoints and drawings. These prints are now very rare.
