The “Firebird” brooch is another example of Niki de Saint Phalle’s distinctive approach to form and symbolism. This brooch portrays a mythical firebird, a symbol of rebirth and transformation. The firebird, with its vibrant colors and majestic wings, seems to be in constant motion, a fitting reflection of the dynamic and lively aesthetic that the artist was known for.

With its bold abstraction and bright hues, this piece is not just an accessory but a wearable work of art. Like her monumental sculptures, such as those in her “Tarot Garden,” the “Fire Bird” brooch fuses mythology, nature, and human emotion into a single striking image.

This colorful piece can be worn both as a brooch and as a necklace.

The Artist

Niki de Saint Phalle

French artist Niki de Saint Phalle is best known for her large, colorful sculptures of curvaceous women. Her work was often made in collaboration with her husband, Jean Tinguely, who incorporated mechanical, moving elements into her pieces. Niki de Saint Phalle’s love of colour came through in her painting as well as her sculpture, but her most famous piece has to be a series of sculptures for the fountain in Place Igor Stravinsky, Paris. The sculptures, which include a bird, an elephant and a heart, rotate continually and many spurt water. The fountain has the perfect backdrop as it is along one side of Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris’s modern art museum.
