Cosmic Wood (2022) by Olympe Racana-Weiler is a large-scale woodcut printed from a single matrix, conceived through a process-driven and bodily approach to printmaking. The carved surface records gesture, rhythm, and physical engagement with the material, translating movement directly into engraved form. The result ends in a composition of elements that resemble a celestial landscape with a thousand details, as the artist stated.
Racana-Weiler’s practice situates printmaking as an extension of the body in action. The woodcut becomes a site where gesture, pressure, and resistance of the material converge, generating an image that functions as a bodily presence rather than a depiction. Rooted in a careful yet fearless approach to craft, the work reflects the artist’s ongoing research into temporality, layering, and the transformation of movement into form, aligning the engraved sign with choreography, rhythm, and spatial composition.
