Watercolour over pencil.

As part of Emanuel von Baeyer Cabinet’s online exhibition ‘Philip Akkerman. Self Portraits: 1984 – 2017’, during Summer 2019.

Philip Akkerman has been making nothing but self portraits since 1981.

The self portrait usually acts as a rare depiction of an artist at some point in their life. For Philip Akkerman, the self portrait is his sole subject. They are systematically made in a continuous series, which was begun in 1981, and since 1984 he has made, beside paintings, also drawings.

Ranging in style from Old Master to abstraction, Akkerman is able to explore various historical areas through drawings. Because his subject is fixed, he is free to focus on technique and various combinations of style. The works in this exhibition begin with 1984 and finish with 2017.
