This original etching is hand-coloured by the artist in watercolour.
It is signed in pencil “M. Ch.” in the lower right margin.
It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 100, in the lower left margin.
Each one of the 100 impressions was hand painted by Chagall in watercolour making each impression a unique work.
This etching is part of the “The Bible” series and was printed by Raymond Haasen, Paris in 1958 in a limited edition of 100 hand-coloured impressions.
It is one the 105 images that Chagall created for this important series published by Tériade, Paris.

The Artist

Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall began using printmaking techniques when he was 35 years old. He produced a lot of lithographs, etchings, and woodcuts while residing in Berlin, Germany, during the time. The art dealer Vollard hired Chagall in 1923 to illustrate the Bible, La Fontaine’s Fables, and The Dead Souls by Gogol.
