Marc Chagall (1887–1985)

They were in Forty Pairs, Thus Numbering Fourscore…, Plate 2 from Four Tales from the Arabian Nights, 1948

Original lithograph on paper

Hand-signed and numbered in pencil

Published in Paris in 1948 by Éditions des Quatre Chemins, Four Tales from the Arabian Nights is considered one of Chagall’s most important illustrated portfolios, uniting his mastery of color lithography with the fantastical imagery of the Arabian Nights. The complete set comprised 12 large-format lithographs, printed at Mourlot.

This impression comes from the scarce edition of only 90 impressions on Arches wove paper, of which this is number 26. Each lithograph was hand-signed and numbered by Marc Chagall. With very few complete portfolios surviving intact, individual plates — particularly They were in Forty Pairs, Thus Numbering Fourscore… — are increasingly rare and sought after on the market.

As one of the most imaginative and vividly colored sheets in the series, this work showcases Chagall’s lyrical dream imagery at its height. Its limited edition, exceptional provenance within the historic Arabian Nights portfolio, and superb condition enhance both its rarity and desirability for collectors
