The exaggerated movement and iconic appeal found within Robert Longo’s large-scale ‘Eric’ of the Men in Cities works is what gives this contemporary artwork legendary edge that transcends time and art trend. The massive monochrome lithograph on rag paper is of an exceptionally limited edition of only 48 works in existence. Longo has become well-known for his series of metropolitan figures in unexpected poses, juxtaposing city life and dress with the abstract nature of explorative performance art in a 2D medium. The ‘Eric’ is signed and numbered by the Artist on the lower front corners and arrives in a minimalist black frame with matte finish. Robert Longo is an American icon of Contemporary Art known for large-scale, hyperrealistic charcoal portraits that consider pop culture, masculinity, identity, power, authority, and social unrest. In the early 1980s, Longo earned acclaim for his bold “Men in the Cities” series, which features business-suited subjects contorted into uncanny poses. Work from the “Men in the Cities series” is prominently featured in the apartment of the character Patrick Bateman in the film “American Psycho.” Since then, he has depicted scenes from the Occupy Wall Street movement, the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris, Black Lives Matter protests, and refugee migrations. A member of the loose cohort of Pictures Generation artists who repurpose mass media images in their artwork, Longo has drawn on photographs and art historical works for inspiration. He often uses a monochromatic palette, carefully building his charcoal surfaces to create a sense of depth and contrast. Longo has exhibited his drawings, photographs, sculptures, and films at the Whitney Biennial in New York, documenta in Kassel, and the Venice Biennale, among many other prestigious exhibitions and museums. On the secondary market, his blue chip work has sold for seven-figure prices.
