Additional Information: This woodcut by Franz Marc is hand signed in pencil by the artist’s wife “Maria Marc” verso.
The paper also bears the violet inkstamp, verso “Handdruck vom Originalholzstock bastaetigt:” (Lugt 1782 b) that confirms that work has been printed by hand.
Our impression is one of ten printed on Japan paper aside from the edition of 100.
It was printed for inclusion in the Bauhaus Mappe III, published in 1922 by the Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar. The paper bears their blindstamp in the lower left corner.
This subject was the ninth of fourteen included in the third Bauhaus portfolio.
Another impression of this work can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New.

Note: This work was originally conceived by Marc to be included in an illustrated edition of the book of Genesis, which was unfortunately never realised due to his untimely death.

Franz Marc

Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.
