Vintage poster for the 1982 Summer Festival season of the San Francisco Opera. David Hockney designed the whimsical sets and costumes for the San Francisco Opera’s production of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rakes Progress”. Here the Bedlam scene is depicted, with masked madmen reciting “Leave all love and hope behind. Out of sight is out of mind”. Quirky doodles and calligraphic flourishes in red, turquoise, and black cover the walls of Hockney’s posterboard set, and below, the madmen peek out from crosshatched compartments. This vintage poster was designed by the artist in our studio and comes directly from our Petersburg Press archive. It is not pre-owned. A slight crease is present in the upper left corner; in otherwise good condition.
