Michele Zalopany’s masterful draftsmanship is evident in this representation of a moving train viewed from below. Painterly strokes of dark green and taupe define sweeping clouds and sparse flora across the hillside, contrasting with the dense grey and black detail of the train cars.

Known for her large-scale realism and Detroit cityscapes, Zalopany often draws from found images, and juxtaposes the man-made with the natural. Here, a symbol of industry cuts through nature with the haunting air of an old photograph.

The Artist

Michele Zalopany

Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes — family snapshots, police photos, real estate, travel documentation — when rendered, directly from the image, with traditional art materials, take on additional meanings, such as socio-psychological-political content.
