Artwork details

Title
The Playful Encounter
Description

“This screenprint is an exploration of two trickster characters. Beginning in the late 19th century, the Ponca and Osage tribes crafted shawls with elaborate abstract patterns alongside representational figures, often beaded or cut out. In the same way, The Playful Encounter pairs ribbon-work inspired patterns with figures. Coyote is confronting Rabbit without snarled teeth, similar to how predators are sometimes playful with their prey. A horizontal and vertical festoon of shapes contrasts in a range of opposite hues along the bottom and right side of the print.” — Julie Buffalohead, 2025
