Once Loved Horses
Description

“In this work, a raccoon reaches toward a ribbon work pattern imbued martingale (a piece of training tack used to control a horse's head height), while clasping to thin bows. Ribbon work is a type of applied decoration utilized by the Ponca and other American Indian tribes. As with other historical horse imagery in which they are depicted as a symbol of wealth, status and spirituality, the Ponca considered the animals as holy. I loved horses as a small child and my drawings were filled with them over and over. In this lithograph the physical absence of the actual animal alludes to my own longing for childhood past.” — Julie Buffalohead, 2026
