Original exhibition poster printed on the occasion of David Hockney’s 1974 exhibit at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. This poster duplicates Hockney’s 1974 drawing Two Vases in the Louvre, offering a glimpse into the Louvre’s inner Neoclassical courtyard. This work revels in texture, from the finely stippled blue and yellow mosaic tiles, to the backlit, electric blue and red window. Light gleams from the edges of the two vases, stoic sentinels whose shadows wash across the floor – one can imagine the overcast but white-lit day in Paris on which this was drawn. 1974 was Hockney’s second year in Paris:
“When I left London to come and live and work in Paris, I hadn’t the least idea of what I was going to paint. I took with me paint, frames and canvases and set to work. I started a picture based on a drawing done in Italy. I gave it up at the end of six weeks and went straight on to two new canvases which revealed themselves to be typically Parisian in spirit…I don’t understand much of the French character or the language. But on the other hand, I know how to use my eyes.”

Text reads: “David Hockney, Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Palais du Louvre, Pavillon de Marsan, 107 Rue de Rivoli, Paris. 11 Octobre – 9 Décembre 1974, 12.00-18.00 sauf le mardi: 11:00-18:00 le Dimanche.”

Generally good condition with minor dimpling, creased upper R edge and lower L corner, and a small chip of paper missing lower edge.
