Erika Hegewisch (born 1936, Dortmund, Germany) is a well-known German printmaker and draughtsman. She studied at the Wuppertal School of Art. Later she assisted Michael Lentz at the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and afterwards Willy Fleckhaus at TWEN. Since 1986 she has worked as an independent artist and has become well-known internationally for her beautifully observed prints and drawings. Her work shows the influence of Seurat’s conté crayon drawings and the way he worked ‘from light into darkness’. Solo shows have been held Galerie Die Insel, Starnberg 1968; Wolfgang Wittrock Kunsthandel, Düsseldorf 1989; Galerie Kornfeld, Zürich 1992; Worthington Gallery, Chicago 1993; Galerie Brockstedt, Hamburg 1996 & 2008; Galerie Barbara Ruetz, München 1998; Galerie Pels-Leusden, Berlin 2001; Galerie Jan Krugier, Dietesheim & Cie, Genf 2006; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg 2009: Galerie an der Pinakothek der Moderne / Barbara Ruetz, München 2016. In addition there was an important non-selling exhibition of her drypoint etchings held at Christie’s, King Street, London SW1 in March 2012 under the title Erika Hegewisch: Out of Darkness.
