George Buday Biography

1907-1990

George Paul Buday, RE, SWE was a well-known wood engraver, painter in watercolour, book illustrator and author. He was born in Hungary and studied art in Romania, Hungary, Austria and Italy. He was lecturer on graphic arts at the Franz Joseph University in Szeged and left Hungary for Britain as an alien in 1937. He settled in Bayswater, then was based at the Rossetti Studios in Flood Street, Chelsea, and in the 1960s he removed to Coulsdon in Surrey where he lived for the remainder of his life. He achieved early success in Britain exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1939 and being elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers in 1938, a full member of the RE in 1953 and a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1954. He achieved some fame with his series of books known as ‘George Buday’s Little Books’ published 1943-56 and 1958. Nick Waters Art.
