The Artist

Mark Di Suvero

Working in the tradition of David Smith and Alexander Calder, Abstract sculptor Mark di Suvero builds colorful and monumental outdoor sculptures. His works incorporate steel, wood, railroad ties, scrap metal, moving or swinging parts, and, most characteristically, industrial I-beams. Using a masterful welding technique to work on all of his sculptures himself, di Suvero integrates found objects and cast-off industrial materials into bold, expressive compositions. His practice is seen by many as a close approximation of the Abstract Expressionist concerns with material, gesture, and form typically found in painting.
