A singular print from the series, Yumeo’s Carp, taken from from Akinari Ueda’s Tales of Moonlight and Rain, published in 1776. The tale tells the story of a protagonist who is dying of an illness. In a fever dream he is swimming freely as a carp, he wakes up when he is about to be cooked at the bar. At the time of his death in the physical realm, if he released a carp painting into the lake, he would become a living fish and swim away.

The complete set of original woodblock prints were exhibited at Jikoji Temple in 1940.

Originally printed in 1940, this print was produced by Munakata’s longterm partner in 1989.
