Untitled from The New York Collection for Stockholm
By Cy Twombly
Cy Twombly was an American painter known for his distinctive, expressive style that fused elements of drawing, writing, and painting. Born in 1928 in Lexington, Virginia, Twombly developed an abstract visual language characterized by scribbles, scratches, and calligraphic marks that often referenced classical mythology, literature, and history. His work emerged in the post-war era alongside contemporaries like Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, but Twombly’s focus on gesture and symbolism set him apart. He spent much of his career in Italy, where the Mediterranean landscape and ancient ruins deeply influenced his aesthetic.
