Mark di Suvero (born 1933 in Shanghai, of Italian descent) is a renowned American sculptor best known for his monumental abstract‑expressionist works in industrial steel . After a serious construction accident in 1960 left him temporarily paralyzed, he learned welding and crane operation—skills central to his large-scale fabrication process .
