Inspired by the Jewish lyrical poem Had Gadya which recounts the victory of freedom over repression, Frank Stella created large-scale, abstract imagery in his signature style for each stanza of the song. The first in the series is this frontispiece, created as an original lithograph and screenprint in colors with unique hand-coloring on wove paper in 1983. Hand-signed, dated, and numbered from the edition of 60, the unframed artwork measures 42 x 33 ¾ in. (107 x 86 cm).  Designated as Axsom 170 in the artist’s catalogue raisonne, the work was published by Waddington Graphics, London, and printed by Brand X Editions, New York.
