As a skateboarder and woodworker, Haroshi’s most well-known works are sculptures made of stacked, hand-carved skateboards which are then painted and polished. Through this process, the many layers of wood are exposed, resulting in a highly detailed, rainbow-like effect on its surface. Haroshi’s repertoire generally features everyday, recognisable objects such as skulls, shoes and toys; here we see a dismembered foot and calf, a seemingly ominous subject matter made jaunty with a multi-coloured coloured palette.

Unsigned and unnumbered; blindstamped lower right on the front. Mint, as issued, with some minor rolling marks and imperfections as per the nature of a poster.

The Artist

Haroshi

A renowned skateboarder and self-taught woodworker, Haroshi makes his works by stacking skateboards and handcarving them before painting and polishing them into veneered finished objects. The boards’ edges peek through as they form layers and layers of colour. Inspired by a 12th-century Buddhist sculpture, Unkei, Haroshi places a broken piece of skateboard into its centre before completion, thus giving it a ‘soul’. His remit features well-known objects, including skulls, teddy bears and trainers.
