Wade Guyton is a post-conceptual American artist best known for his monochrome digital paintings made with an Epson inkjet printer. In his early work, Guyton used a desktop printer to lay black X-shapes, which would become his signature mark, over pages taken from interior design catalogues. His work recycles images using inkjet printing, photo silk-screening, and stenciling to imitate abstract paintings.

This large-scale print, titled X Poster (Untitled, 2008), features a new image of the artist’s famous ‘X’ paintings. It is produced to the scale of Guyton’s original inkjet on canvas, and is an Epson Ultrachrome inkjet on linen. It is signed and numbered in black ink on a label affixed to the original cardboard sleeve.

This work is sold in ‘as new’ condition, and will be shipped in it’s original packaging (in a 24×36″ sleeve).

The Artist

Wade Guyton

Wade Guyton is an artist born in 1972 in Indiana. He attended the University of Tennessee, where he earned a BA, before moving to New York, where he received his MFA in 1998. Guyton applies inkjet printing techniques to canvas. The resulting images often contain streaks, drips, and blurring, which are natural consequences of the unpredictable interactions between ink and linen. He has described such interactions as evidence of the “struggle” between the printer and the material. Thus, while Guyton’s images are based on meticulously drawn plans, he can never be sure how the finished artwork will turn out. The colour black and the letter x are frequently seen in Guyton’s creations, and he often produces his pictures in series.
