James Sullivan Biography

James Sullivan was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1952, and earned an MFA in sculpture at California State University, Long Beach and a BA in philosophy at Yale University. He has taught as Visiting Professor at the Hochschule der Kunste, Berlin, and acted as Visiting Critic at the Yale School of Architecture, New Haven and Gachon University, Seoul. He is Professor Emeritus at Southern Methodist University, where he served as chair from 1995-2009. He has exhibited widely in a number of media including sculpture, sculptural installation, performance, drawing, and prints. He has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Sol del Rio and Concepción 41 in Guatemala; the Art Museum of South Texas; Meadows Museum of Art, Dallas; Amerika Haus, Berlin; Galerie Muhlenbusch, Düsseldorf; Conduit Gallery, Dallas; and the Museum Moderner Kunst, Passau. He has participated in more than 50 group exhibitions throughout the United States and Germany. He is a 1989 recipient of the Philip Morris Skulptur Stipendiat to work in residency in Berlin, Germany. He was the 2018 Distinguished International Artist at the Jurisan International Art Foundation in Hadong, South Korea. He has been represented by Conduit Gallery, Dallas, since 1990 and worked collaboratively with Hellen Ascoli since 2015. He lives and works in Dallas, Texas.
