The Blanket of Reasonable Luxury
By Lubaina Himid
Lubaina Himid is a British artist, curator, and professor who emerged as a key figure in the UK’s Black Arts Movement during the 1980s. Born in Zanzibar in 1954 and raised in England, Himid uses painting, installation, and printmaking to explore themes of cultural history, identity, and the legacies of colonialism. Her work often highlights the overlooked contributions of Black people in Western history and confronts issues such as racism, institutional exclusion, and the representation of Black women. Himid’s vibrant, narrative-driven pieces frequently include theatrical compositions and symbolic objects, aiming to both critique and reimagine dominant historical narratives.
