Maurice Langaskens Biography

(1884-1946)

Maurice Langaskens was a Belgian painter-printmaker, who depicted the simple life of his compatriots in a compelling and glorifying way. Whether showing people and animals at work, religious scenes or winter landscapes, Langaskens reflects a sturdy reality, proud of its strength. His symbolist style idealises his native country in strong colours. Even during his internment in a camp in Goettingen, during the war, fellow prisoners look majestic. It is unclear where he learned his craft as a colour etcher, or where he printed his work. Tags advertising his work, when he lived in Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek (one of the 19 ward of Brussels), suggest he may have printed in a personal studio at his own press.
