This original etching and aquatint in colours is hand signed in pencil by the artist “Marc Chagall” at the lower right margin. It is dated ‘1923’ next to the signature.
It is also hand inscribed in pencil “epreuve d’artiste planche non tirée/IIe état” [artist’s proof/plate not pulled/ second state]. This is an extremely rare artist’s proof of the second state printed in 1923 before the final state and subsequent edition of 50 in 1957.
The edition was printed by Louis Fort, Paris and published by Paul Haasen, Paris in 1957.

The Artist

Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall began using printmaking techniques when he was 35 years old. He produced a lot of lithographs, etchings, and woodcuts while residing in Berlin, Germany, during the time. The art dealer Vollard hired Chagall in 1923 to illustrate the Bible, La Fontaine’s Fables, and The Dead Souls by Gogol.
