Here, Ai breaks down contemporary British society through the prism of £100. Like so much of his most powerful work, it is unapologetically critical of the social, economic and political structures of the capitalist West. Starting by listing the more arbitrary commodities available to a person with £100 – cans of baked beans, taxi journeys and marijuana – Ai digresses into examining the value of £100 as a percentage of vast sums being made and spent by powerful individuals and institutions. In doing so, he highlights the divide and disparity found in society today and implicitly demands action be taken.
