Jan Matulka was an early proponent of modernism in America, bringing European avant-garde influencesespecially Cubisminto his work. His subjects included still lifes and figures, but it is his rare lithographs of New York City that are the most accomplished, capturing the energy and architectural dynamism of the era. He moved to New York from Czechoslovakia in the early 1900s and was deeply influenced by the city’s skyline, streets, and bridges.
