Created in 1925 during Matisse’s celebrated Nice period, Nu au fauteuil sur fond moucharabieh reflects the artist’s refined exploration of the female nude within richly patterned interiors. The seated figure, defined by supple, confident line, conveys both serenity and quiet sensuality.

The intricate moucharabieh screen behind her introduces rhythmic geometry that contrasts with the softness of the body. Rather than functioning as a simple backdrop, the lattice integrates decoration and structure, flattening space while enhancing the composition’s harmony — a hallmark of Matisse’s mature style.

The lithograph was issued in an edition of 50 impressions on Arches paper (the present example numbered 3/50), alongside ten artist’s proofs and nine trial proofs. Hand signed and referenced as Duthuit 470, the work stands as a refined example of Matisse’s mastery of line, intimacy, and decorative balance in printmaking.
