This original etching and aquatint in colours is hand signed in pencil by the artist “Marc Chagall” at the lower right margin.
It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 50, at the lower left margin. There were also ten artist’s proofs numbered with Roman numerals.
This is the twentieth composition of twenty comprising the portfolio ‘Songes’ [Dreams] printed by Lacourière et Frélaut, Paris in 1981 and published by Éditions Gérald Cramer, Geneva in the same year.

The Artist

Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall began using printmaking techniques when he was 35 years old. He produced a lot of lithographs, etchings, and woodcuts while residing in Berlin, Germany, during the time. The art dealer Vollard hired Chagall in 1923 to illustrate the Bible, La Fontaine’s Fables, and The Dead Souls by Gogol.
