Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, 1972-76 – Photograph on Alu Dibond – Signed by Christo, Jeanne-Claude and the photographer: W.Volz — Running Fence was an 18-foot (5.5 meters) high, 24.5-mile (39.4 kilometers) long art installation extending east-west near Freeway 101, north of San Francisco, descending to the Pacific Ocean at Bodega Bay. Completed on September 10, 1976, it involved 42 months of collaborative work, including the participation of 59 ranchers, public hearings, court sessions, and an extensive Environmental Impact Report. Funded solely by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude through the sale of project-related art, the installation was constructed of white nylon fabric and steel poles, with all components removed post-exhibition, leaving no trace.
