This original etching and aquatint with carborundum is hand signed in white pencil by the artist “Miró” in the lower right image.
It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 50, at the lower left image. There were also a small number of hors commerce impressions.
It was printed in a limited edition of 50 signed and numbered impressions by Morsang, Paris and published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris in the same year.
The paper bears the Maeght watermark in the right margin.

Note: The name Galatea is most likely inspired by the Ancient Greek sea nymph of the same name. She was one of 50 nereids, female spirits of the sea and daughters of the ‘Old man of the Sea’. As with much of Greek mythology there are several stories attributed to Galatea by Homer and Hesiod as well as later works by Ovid and Virgil. Her son Galas is considered the forefather of the Gauls.

The Artist

Joan Miro

Joan Miró was a Spanish artist who was known for his abstract and surrealist artwork. He was active in the printmaking medium, creating lithographs, etchings, and linocuts. Miró’s prints often feature biomorphic shapes, bold colours and abstract patterns that are inspired by nature, and the subconscious mind.
