Description

The artist writes:

“I’m not sure how we ended up with Handel‘s Messiah blasting in the Print studio, but it resulted in a group of works we called H. M. in its honor. These works were directly painted with brushes on the plexiglass plates with strong color harmonies, and exuberant floral imagery that dances all over the compositions. We mixed up a riotous ensemble of inks in different hues and values, resulting in pieces with a beautiful varied palette of color and movement."

"H.M. No. 6” is a monotype diptych made up of two 30 x 22 inch prints. As a diptych the two prints are sold together as a pair. Each print is signed on the front, lower margin with an indication of its position, (L) or (R).

The prints in the "H.M." series were made using oil-based inks and R&M pigment sticks on Arnhem 1618 paper.

The Artist

Catherine Howe

Catherine Howe’s prints appear to reference 17th-century still life paintings, yet are not about representation or narrative; rather, she says they are exercises in the evocative power of painting as a material. What appear to be flora, figures, and foods dissolve into abstract flurries of brush marks and fields of commingled colors when observed closely. Howe’s use of the carborundum collagraph medium mimics her approach to painting, allowing her to make rapid, deft gestures in thick gel medium.
