In the “Iteration Blue” series of metalpoint drawings, Jonathan Higgins puts a contemporary spin on an old master technique. Using soft metals to make marks on the prepared deep ultramarine blue ground, traces of the metal are left on the surface and density is built up by repeated marks. Metalpoint, or silverpoint, was widely used by Renaissance artists, typically on a white or light ground. On a dark ground the reflective qualities and color of the metals are emphasized.
