The images in Sarah Smelser’s “Sandia” series reflect the experience of being in the high desert environments of the American Southwest. Influences such as a particular quality of light, the hot and dry climate, and the colors of the landscape can all be seen in these works, filtered through Smelser’s abstract sensibility.
The artist prints on Kitakata – a thin kozo paper – using oil-based inks, which is then mounted to a white rag paper.
