Texas Road Hog  (Ruby) was published by Flatbed Press in 2017. The artist, Bruce Lee Webb, is an avid collector of antiques, old books, fairground oddities and banners, fraternal lodge regalia, and artwork made by outsider or self-taught artists. Using some found materials, he paints upon materials containing a history that inspire his mark-making: old postal bags and flour sacks, scrap metal and found objects, rags, and slips of paper.  When Webb came to Flatbed to create a series of etchings, he decided to use one of his favorite subjects of an invented phrenological head with the different areas named for cities or towns located in Texas, thus “Texas Road Hog.”

The combination copper plate sugar-lift aquatint and polymer gravure was used to create four editions of ten impressions each. The key plate was created through the use of a hand-applied sugar lift, while the photopolymer text plate printed in color contains vintage and antique doctors notes, substantiating the phrenological iconography in the figure. A third relief plate added a transparent ruby hue.

The Artist

Bruce Lee Webb

Bruce Lee is the co-conspirator and co-creator of Webb Gallery in downtown Waxahachie. He loves hobo lore and train car graffiti. He is a researcher and collector by nature and co-authored the book As Above So Below -Art of the Fraternal Lodge with Lynne Adele and published by the University of Texas Press.
Bruce Lee’s grandparents were missionaries in the mountains of Kerala, South India during the 1930s and ’40s, where his mother was born. In his youth, he was surrounded by their esoteric books and folk art which they brought back to the U.S. These mysterious treasures were Bruce’s earliest inspirations.
